Given the wide variety of wobblers, there has never been a strict classification based solely on their shape or size. However, there are fundamental names that help categorize them based on their functional characteristics. Generally, all spinning wobblers can be divided into two main groups: wobblers with a diving lip and lipless wobblers.
These wobblers have a specialized lip in the front, which helps them dive quickly and enhances their movement during retrieval. They are further classified based on their body shape.
Minnow – Resembling the European minnow, these wobblers are generally elongated with a small lip, producing a tight wobble with small amplitude. They mimic baitfish like bleak, which are commonly preyed upon by predatory fish. Most minnow wobblers are surface or shallow-diving, but deep-diving versions also exist with large diving lips.
Crank (Crankbait) – Also called the "Short and Stout", these are noticeably thicker and rounder than minnows. Due to their body shape, they create a wide wobbling motion when retrieved, starting their movement even with the slightest pull. Crankbaits are further divided into two subcategories:
Jerkbaits – These are larger, heavier wobblers that do not have a strong natural wobble during steady retrieval. Instead, they require twitching or jerking to activate their movement. Some models respond to aggressive pulls, while others react better to gentler movements. Jerkbaits are further divided into:
Lipless wobblers are classified based on their position in the water column and movement characteristics. Some float near the surface, while others sink quickly to deeper areas.
Rattlin (Rattlers) – These have a flattened front (forehead) that acts as a built-in diving lip, allowing them to vibrate intensely during retrieval or lifting. Most rattlers are sinking wobblers, making them effective for reaching deep water. Traditionally, they contained loud rattling chambers with steel balls inside, but silent versions are also available today.
Darts – Long, narrow, and heavy wobblers, similar to minnow models but with a diagonal cutting edge.
These are surface wobblers, including several subcategories:
Many of these wobblers are also available as jointed models, which feature articulated bodies for enhanced movement.
Hybrid wobblers fall into two main categories:
These hybrid wobblers can mimic the shape and function of any of the above types
